This is one of my attempts at being disciplined. I'm going to follow it until I get a habit/routine out of it.

I plan my meal plan according to the flyers. I try to buy only what's on SALE. I learned this from my mom. I use coupons. I buy in bulk.(there was just a sale on bacon buy one get one free, so I bought 2 and got 2...stocked up for awhile in bacon)
ie. Instead of buying costly lunch meat I buy a ham and slice it up and that's the lunch meat for quite some time(throw lots into the freezer).
I do tons of baking.
I have been trying to use CASH instead of debit, or cc. This MAKES you stay within your budget.

* long comment alert! *

I am revealing my status as a totally boring Mom-type person, but it would be fun to all get together once a week for a couple weeks and swap recipes and plan meals. Those of us who are experts can share their wisdom, and those who would like to start can learn!

I'm only a novice, but I try to use the flyers and figure out what's on sale. I plan my week around what is cheapest. For example, this week at Save On, roast beef is on sale. It's not a great price, but it's okay. I'll buy two, one to stew up into Enchilada Beef, and one roast. The roast will feed us for at least two meals plus sandwiches. The Enchilada Beef will give us one night of Enchiladas or Mexican Lasagne plus one complete Mexican lasagne in the freezer.

Cucumber is on sale (59 cents! amazing!) and so is Olympic organic yogurt. This means I'll also buy cukes and yogurt, and make Tzatziki. There's also a coupon for $10 off those frozen chicken breasts. I'll use some of the chicken breasts and make Chicken Souvlaki. The rest of the chicken breasts will go in the freezer.

It's a bit of a hassle to plan ahead, but after a while I think you will see a change in your grocery bill. Also, remember that if you are making a whole lifestyle change to healthier living, eating healthy can be more expensive than eating junk. Fruits and veggies and whole grains are more expensive than a bunch of Kraft Dinner and Wonder bread. But personally I believe it's worth it for better health. At least we save money on prescriptions! :)
